GOLDEN Online Graduate-Level Courses

The GOLDEN (Global Online Distance Education Network) MA program, housed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, offers graduate level courses specifically designed for German language teachers. All courses are offered online and may be taken either as stand-alone courses or as part of a formal MA program. GOLDEN courses actively engage participants in co-constructing knowledge and building skills through online collaboration and emphasize the creation of activities and products that can be directly implemented into the language classroom. The GOLDEN MA program has consistently been ranked in the top 10 Online Graduate Programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

Two courses will be offered in the fall semester 2017: The Interpretive Mode: Reading and Listening in the German Classroom, and Web 2.0 in the German Classroom. Individuals not officially enrolled in the GOLDEN MA program may take individual GOLDEN courses as desired. For information on how to enroll in the MA program and/or how to register for individual GOLDEN courses, please contact Sheri Hurlbut. See Course Descriptions▼

Technology-enhanced German Language Instruction (Web 2.0 in the German Classroom). (TEAC 922X) This online course explores a variety of Web 2.0 tools (Prezi, Soccrative, Kahoot, Google Forms, Jing, Glogster, Mural.ly, etc.) with the purpose of improving foreign language teaching and learning practices. You will be placed in the role of the learner as you work and create your own products using web applications in the same way that your students would. Then you will reflect on this learning experience as a teacher, as you analyze and discuss about it with your fellow classmates. German will be used in all products.

The Interpretive Mode: Reading and Listening in the German Classroom. (TEAC 922R) Reading and listening are presented together in one course because they are related skills in the sense that they both represent the interpretive mode of communication. Both are receptive skills, and as such, have much in common. We will be exploring all aspects of reading and listening, including assessment strategies, exploring reading and listening as processes, designing tasks to enhance reading and listening comprehension, exploring ways to increase the quality, quantity, and variety of learners’ reading and listening, guidelines for selecting appropriate reading and listening texts, and much more.
