Practice and Released Exams

The National German Exam practice and released exams provide students with a chance to familiarize themselves with exam content, question types, and how the electronic exam operates. They also provide test administrators with an opportunity to test the operability of the exam on the computers that will be used on exam day. Like the operational Exam, these exams have two sections.

  • Section I assesses listening and viewing
  • Section II assesses reading

Structure and Functionality. The practice and released exams reflect the structure and functionality of the National German Exam. Students can take these exams an unlimited number of times.

Practice Exams 1 and 2. The practice exams have fewer questions in Section I and Section II than the operational exams. These exams are not timed and students can view their results immediately after submitting their responses. These shortened versions allow students to take them during a regular class period and provides the instructor with ample time for follow-up class discussion on the exam content and individual items.

Released Exams. The released exams served as the 2016 Operational Exams. They are full exams with 50 questions in each section. These exams are timed and provide students with an authentic exam experience. Students can view their results immediately after submitting their responses.

Computer System Requirements. In order to take the practice exams, each student must have use of a personal computer that has access to the Internet. Each computer station should have a set of headphones so that students may hear the audio portion of the exam. System Requirements for the Exam are available here.
