Intercultural Learning: Goals, Approaches and Teaching Materials edited by Rachel Halverson and Pennylyn Dykstra-Pruim. Introduction to Intercultural Learning + CD-ROM.

The AATG Cultural Taskforce was established in 2003 to examine the potential teaching culture has to engage students in intercultural learning. Intercultural Learning: Goals, Approaches and Teaching Materials represents the culmination of the taskforce’s work. In the introduction "Teaching Culture in the German Classroom: A Framework for Intercultural Learning,” Eric Klaus traces the history of the taskforce, surveys the current literature on teaching culture, and presents the three phases of Intercultural Learning developed by the Culture Taskforce. Five teaching units incorporating these three phases are available on the CD-ROM. Each unit includes step-by-step instructions for classroom use as well as photocopy-ready worksheets and assignments. Topics range from clichés and the concept of "home” to the Montagsdemonstrationen and the Nikolaikirche, the Leipziger Tafel and its efforts to end hunger in the city, and the Rhine as a geographical and cultural phenomenon. The publication of this collection of teaching materials was made possible by generous support from Federal Republic of Germany’s Transatlantik-Programm (European Recovery Program [ERP] des Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie [BMWi]), the Ständigen Ausschuss Deutsch als Fremdsprache, and the Goethe-Institut.
